With the RHS Chelsea Flower Show taking place this week and summer on the horizon, more of us than ever are looking to finally start making the most of our gardens and outdoor spaces.
However, not everyone is lucky enough to have their own garden space. In fact, only 76% of people in the UK have access to their own private garden, and 8% of people don’t have access to any form of garden or other listed outdoor space at all (Source).
But where in the UK is the best place for garden lovers to live? Whether you’re a gardening pro or an outdoor enthusiast, LeisureBench has got you covered, as our experts have carefully analysed every UK city to find which one is the best to live in if you treasure your outdoor space.
Taking into consideration the number of available homes with gardens, the number of allotment sites per 100,000 people and the average hours of sunshine a year in each location.
The Results:
- Wells - Somerset
- Durham - County Durham
- Ripon - North Yorkshire
- Salisbury - Wiltshire
- Truro - Cornwall
- Sunderland - Tyne And Wear
- Hereford - Herefordshire
- Worcester - Worcestershire
- Stoke On Trent - Staffordshire
- Lincoln - Lincolnshire
Wells in Somerset takes the top spot, closely followed by Durham in County Durham.
In Wells, 92% of available homes have gardens, there are 25 allotment sites per 100,000 people, and there are on average 1606 hours of sunshine a year (roughly 67 days).
In Durham, 87.5% of available homes have gardens, there's a massive 175 allotment sites per 100,000 people, and there are on average 1480 hours of sunshine a year (roughly 62 days).
Stepping away from the top 10 ranking of all the factors combined, we also found the best UK cities for each factor individually:
The UK city with the most hours of sunshine a year: Chichester, 1919 hours
The UK city with the highest percentage of available houses with gardens: Doncaster, 92.4%
The UK city with the most allotment sites per 100,000 people: Durham, 175 sites.
When it comes to finding the perfect city to live in for you, it’s important to consider how easy it would be to find a home with an efficient garden or allotment space, especially if being outside is something you truly enjoy every summer.
